CIWA-PORT HARCOURT, Jan 9, 2025
Catholic Institute of West Africa (CIWA), in solidarity with the Diocese of Nnewi, celebrates the remarkable life and legacy of Monsignor Professor Christopher Ejizu, whose earthly journey concluded on January 9, 2025. The announcement of his passing by the Diocese of Nnewi marks the exit of an extraordinary priest, scholar, and administrator who made a profound and lasting impact on the Church and society.
Monsignor Ejizu lived a life of graceful dedication, seamlessly blending intellectual brilliance with pastoral zeal. Very Reverend Father Professor Jude Abidemi Asanbe, Rector of CIWA, offered a heartfelt tribute: “What a fine gentleman, outstanding scholar, astute administrator, and stellar priest. Requiescat in pace, Most Senior.” Known for his dignified and gracious demeanor, Monsignor Ejizu’s legacy echoes deeply with those who had the privilege of knowing him.
His contributions to the Church and academia are manifold, reflecting a life of purpose and service. He served as Rector of St. Paul Minor Seminary, Ukpor; Lecturer and Chaplain at the College of Education, Nsugbe; Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Port Harcourt; Chancellor and Secretary of the Archdiocese of Onitsha; and visiting lecturer at Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu. Fr. Professor Egere aptly remarked: “Your services to the Church and society will open the gates of paradise for you. May God grant you eternal rest.”
Fr. Professor Luke Ijezie, a former student of Monsignor Ejizu at Bigard Seminary in the mid-1980s, described him as a “consummate teacher of African Traditional Religion and Culture,” whose intellectual legacy will remain etched in the annals of both the Church and academia.
Adding a personal touch, Very Revd Fr Cosmas Ebebe reflected on their shared journey: “You welcomed us to the seminary as our Rector shortly after your priestly ordination. Our paths intertwined in teaching and secretariat services until we met again at CIWA. You have played your part and left the stage. May Our Lady intercede for you as you rest in the Lord.”
Ordained a priest on April 20, 1974, Monsignor Ejizu hailed from Otolo, Nnewi North Local Government Area, Anambra State. A contemporary of distinguished scholars like Ikenga-Metuh, he co-authored the seminal work “Hundred Years of Catholicism in Eastern Nigeria 1885–1985.” His intellectual prowess earned him recognition as Editor-in-Chief of the Society of Research and Academic Excellence, solidifying his place among the Church’s most esteemed thinkers.
As the first priest in Nigeria to be called to eternal rest during the Jubilee Year 2025, Monsignor Ejizu’s passing is imbued with the hope and joy that define the Church’s understanding of death. The faith-filled tributes from his colleagues and students are not marked by mourning alone but by deep gratitude for a life lived in unwavering service to God and humanity.
In a related development, the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of Christ, have called for prayers following the confirmed abduction of two of their members, Sister Vincentia Maria Nwankwo and Sister Grace Mariette Okoli, in Anambra State. The congregation appeals to the faithful for divine intervention and the safe return of their sisters.
Monsignor Professor Christopher Ejizu’s life is a tribute to resilient faith, intellectual excellence, and pastoral dedication. Though he has departed from this world, his enduring contributions will continue to inspire generations, ensuring that his name remains cherished in the hearts of all who encountered his profound influence.
