The library of Catholic Institute of West Africa Port Harcourt Rivers State was established along with the Institute in the year 1981. In the year 2015, the library opened a second branch at CIWA Obehie campus in Abia State to serve the information needs of the undergraduate students and the entire Faculty of Arts and Communication. The general objective of CIWA Library is to provide adequate information materials to support learning and research to actualize the educational objective of the Institute.
The library provides services which include: Acquisition, Cataloguing/Classification, Indexing, Reference services, Library Orientation, Current Awareness services, Bibliographic services, Internet services, Book loan services, Circulation services among others. The library is also fully automated. Currently, CIWA library holds a collection of about 50,000 volumes of books and periodicals.
The Library hour is: 8am to 10pm Monday - Friday and 8am to 4pm on Saturdays. During holidays: 8am to 4pm Monday - Friday.
Our Library has staff strength of eight (8), ranging from the Librarians, Assistant Librarians, Library Assistants, and Library Attendants.
In 2017, CIWA Library established electronic library which enables students have access to the online databases of streams of information materials on the internet. The availability of strong internet connection and a number of computers makes the e-library easily accessible and supportive.
Also in 2017, the Library received a donation of over 7000 book titles from the Theological Book Network, a USA- based charity organization which has also chosen CIWA Library as their book distribution center for other benefiting Libraries in Nigerian. CIWA Library also benefited from the Prince Tony Momoh Foundation in Ibadan, Oyo State. This foundation donated to our library, a set of four volumes of current re-print of encyclopedia of mass media and communication. These books hugely boosted the collection of our library. According to Ranganathan the father of librarianship, 'the library is a growing organism' so we hope and believe that better days are ahead for CIWA library.
