Breaking News: Fr. Dr. Ikhane Callistus Of Auchi Diocese Bags Ciwa's Prestigious 2022/2023 Best Dissertation Award

-CIWA, Port Harcourt, December 9, 2024-

In a moment of academic triumph that will echo across the Catholic intellectual world, Fr. Dr. Callistus Ikhane of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi  clinched the *Academic Excellence Award for Best Dissertation* for the 2022/2023 session at the renowned *Catholic Institute of West Africa (CIWA)* in Port Harcourt.

CIWA, lauded as a citadel of academic rigour and theological brilliance, is known for producing some of the finest minds in the Church. As the late Archbishop Patrick Ekpu of Benin City once remarked, it is a citadel “for those with high cerebral capacity.” The Best Dissertation Award, one of CIWA’s most coveted accolades, represents the pinnacle of scholarly achievement and is a testament to both intellect and innovation.

Fr. Ikhane’s dissertation, titled “Confirmation as the Sacrament of Social Justice”, captivated the academic board with its groundbreaking exploration of the interplay between liturgical theology and societal transformation. His work, supervised by the esteemed *Revd Fr. DDr. Emmanuel Anagwo*, bridges the sacred and the practical, posing the thought-provoking question: “After the celebration, what next?”

Speaking to our correspondents Precious Famgba and Sr. Roselyn Egbuchulem, SDV, the awardee expressed deep gratitude to his Bishop, Gabriel Dunia  for guiding him toward Sacred Liturgy as his area of specialization. “Liturgy is not just theology in theory—it is theology in action,” he said. “It is Liturgy in celebration that brings theology to life.”

Fr. Ikhane highlighted the transformative impact his studies have had on his diocese, particularly in fostering deeper liturgical awareness and greater participation among the faithful. “Attention to liturgical details, often overlooked, has enriched our communal worship,” he noted.

At the award ceremony, the Rector of the Institute, *Very Rev. Fr. Prof. Jude Abidemi Asanbe*, praised Fr. Ikhane’s dedication and intellectual rigour, urging all students, particularly new Ph.D. inductees, to prioritize research that is both relevant and impactful.

In his acceptance speech, Fr. Ikhane, visibly moved, described the honour as humbling. “I remain in awe of CIWA’s commitment to academic excellence and its role in shaping minds for the Church and society. I owe this to the institution’s stellar leadership and the great  support of my Bishop &  supervior,” he said.

Fr. Ikhane, an alumnus of the Seminary of All Saints, Uhiele-Ekpoma, was ordained a priest on September 24, 2005. He currently serves as Dean of Deanery One of Auchi Diocese, Director of Liturgy, Auchi Diocese, Coordinator of Priestly Life and Ministry and Parish Priest of *St. John the Apostle Parish, Igarra*, in Edo State.

This remarkable achievement underscores not only Fr. Ikhane’s brilliance but also the invaluable role CIWA continues to play in shaping the future of Catholic scholarship in Africa and beyond.

The event, held on the  Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, featured a Solemn Mass, the induction of new PhD students, and the presentation of an academic excellence award.

The celebration began at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Chaplaincy, the institute’s chapel, with the choir’s stirring rendition of *"On This Day, O Beautiful Mother."* The Eucharistic celebration was presided over  by the Rector, Very Rev. In his welcoming address, Fr. Asanbe expressed gratitude to God for CIWA’s 43 years of impactful contributions to theological and academic excellence in West Africa. He warmly welcomed the congregation, stating:
> “Today is a day of triple celebration: the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the 43rd Anniversary of CIWA’s establishment, and the induction of 17 first year PhD candidates who have successfully met the institute’s rigorous standards after completing their  probation. We give thanks to God for His blessings and ask for the blessed Virgin Mary’s intercession as we continue this journey.”

The homily, delivered by Rev. Fr. Dr. Emmanuel Okogwa of the Moral Theology Department, centered on the theme *“Responding to the Mercy of God Like Mary.”* Fr. Okogwa described mercy as “the disposition to be kind and forgiving, to help those in need, and a profound expression of love.” Reflecting on Mary’s humility and obedience, he declared, *“If you cannot be a good disciple, you cannot be a good leader.”* He urged Christians to go beyond bearing the name “Christian” and to live lives that reflect the demands of their faith. Concluding, he lauds CIWA for its contributions to the Church and society over the years and asks for greater collaboration for high feats.

Before the final rites of the first half of the celebration, the Registrar of the Institute, Rev. Fr. The Mass culminated in a solemn rendition of *"Salve Regina"* as priests processed out of the chapel, marking the conclusion of the first part of the day’s activities.

The second segment of the day's celebrations took place  at CIWA’s Multipurpose Hall, where Rev. Fr. Okhueleigbe Osemhantie anchored the programme. The Rector, Very Rev. Fr. Prof. Jude Abidemi Asanbe, gave the opening address, thanking God and commending CIWA community for its  dedication and contributions to the wheels of progress. He commended specially Very Rev. Fr. Prof. Ignatius Obinwa, CIWA’s oldest faculty member from the Biblical Theology Department, for his  commitment to the institute’s vision and activities.

Before the induction ceremony for the 17 first-year PhD candidates, the Rector provided guidance:
> “Many have embarked on this journey you are about to begin—some successfully, others not. I urge you to choose topics that are researchable and relevant, and to embrace your studies with focus and dedication. Avoid distractions and the temptation to gallivant; instead, commit fully to the rigours of academic life.”

The highlight of the day was the presentation of the Academic Excellence Award to Rev. Fr. Dr. Callistus Ikhane of the Liturgy Department, whose Dissertation was adjudged the best for the 2022/23 academic session. The Rector emphasized that the award criteria now include academic excellence, dissertation depth, and active participation in CIWA community life.
> “This award,” the Rector noted, “is part of the initiatives of this administration to foster excellence. I also take this opportunity to announce that once we receive the required light from Rome, CIWA will resume its convocation ceremonies for the STL programme, a tradition that has produced seven convocations in the past.”

In his acceptance speech, Fr. Ikhane expressed deep gratitude:
> “This honour is both unexpected and humbling. I thank the  rector  and my primary supervisor, Very Rev. Fr. DDr. Anagwo, for his guidance and  CIWA academic management for recognizing my efforts. I encourage CIWA to continue its strides toward autonomy so that all our activities and ceremonies can take place seamlessly within our campus.”

The ceremony concluded with a Benediction by Very Rev. Fr. Prof. Ignatius Obinwa, bringing the historic day to a close. The atmosphere was one of joy and anticipation as the new PhD candidates, the awardee, and the entire CIWA community celebrated their shared achievements and aspirations.

Advent Mass At Ciwa: A Sacred Rhythm Of Preparation And Peace

-CIWA, Obehie-Campus, Port Harcourt-

The Catholic Institute of West Africa (CIWA), Obehie Campus, witnessed an extraordinary spiritual gathering as the Second Sunday of Advent was marked with solemnity and grace. Following the liting of the First Advent Candle by the Chaplain, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Peter Uchu,  a Sunday ago, today’s Mass carried forward the sacred tradition, kindling the Bethlehem Candle of Peace.

This Second Sunday of Advent is a call to reflection, repentance, and renewal—a moment to prepare hearts for the coming of the Saviour. The Institute Chapel brimmed with anticipation as the liturgical celebration began with the soul-stirring hymn "The Coming of Our God," performed exquisitely by the choir. Their voices, harmoniously blended, created an ethereal atmosphere that enveloped the congregation, setting the tone for the sacred mysteries.

The Mass was presided at  by Very Rev. Fr. DDr. Philip Omenukwa,  flanked  Rev. Fr. Andrew Otu and Rev. Fr. Victor Jammah, amidst the presence of Rev. Fr. Dr. Justin Temswang, the Subdean of Students Affairs, Rev. Fr. Dr.  Emmanuel Okogwa, the seasoned Moral Theologian  and eight other priests at the  Eucharistic celebration.

The congregation hung on every word during the Liturgy of the Word, but it was the homily by Fr. Philip that emerged as the spiritual crescendo of the first half of the  day's Mass. Speaking with eloquence and depth, he unraveled the profound call to service at the heart of Advent. “The Church,” he affirmed, “is never meant to be in competition with the world rather to serve it.” He reminded the faithful that the Church is both the messenger of the Good News and the gathering of God’s people, emphasizing the inseparable bond between the Word of God and the Church, where the Word serves as the light that dispels darkness.

Fr. Philip’s message echoed  deeply as he drew inspiration from John the Baptist's clarion call for repentance. He implored CIWA community to introspect, urging them to clear away the clutter of noise, distractions, and negativity that hinder spiritual and personal growth. “Silence the voices of gossip, schemes, and negative reports,” he said, “and straighten your paths in readiness for the coming of the Lord.”

As reported by our correspondent Benedict Adara, "in a masterful metaphor, he compared spiritual preparation to rebooting a computer system. “To be ready for the Kingdom of God,” he urged, “you must shut down and restart, recalibrating your heart to align with God’s purpose.”

The Mass concluded with an atmosphere of deep reverence and renewed hope, as the congregation departed, inspired to embrace the Advent call to reflection and peace, while keeping in mind that tomorrow December 9, is the Solemnity of the  Immaculate Conception and the 44th founding anniversary of the Institute CIWA.

This remarkable celebration of the Second Sunday of Advent was captured by Benedict Adara  and Dickson Enwono, correspondents of CESACC-CIWA, with editorial refinement by Fr. Okhueleigbe Osemhantie. The liturgical excellence and the rich theological insights of the day reaffirm CIWA’s commitment to nurturing both academic and spiritual growth..

Catholic Institute Of West Africa (ciwa) At The Dawn Of 7th Inaugural Lecture

A Testament to Academic Excellence

Inaugural lectures are intellectual milestones that symbolize a scholar’s formal contribution to the academic world. They are not just ceremonies but profound avenues for the dissemination of groundbreaking knowledge. The Catholic Institute of West Africa (CIWA), Port Harcourt, has been at the forefront of this tradition, marking its place as a beacon of academic rigour. Since 2022, CIWA has hosted six inaugural lectures, each illuminating various fields of theological, social, and cultural relevance.

The inaugural series at CIWA commenced with Prof. Patrick Chukwudezie Chibuko of the Department of Liturgical Theology. On Tuesday, April 27, 2021, he delivered a groundbreaking lecture titled Dynamics of Liturgy in the COVID-19 and Post-COVID-19 Pandemic Era: Implications for the Church in Nigeria. This lecture provided profound insights into how the Church adapted its liturgical practices during an unprecedented global health crisis.

On January 14, 2022, the series continued with Monsignor Prof. Joseph Oladejo Faniran, Africa’s pioneer pastoral communications expert, who explored The Search for the Nexus Between Communication and Theology: From *Fides Quaerens to Communicationem *Et Intellectum. His lecture traced the intricate connections between faith, communication, and intellectual engagement, cementing his status as a thought leader in this field.

Next came Prof. Emmanuel Okwudiri Nwaoru on Friday, June 3, 2022, with his thought-provoking discourse, Israel Amongst the Nations: A Look at Biblical and Sociopolitical Issues in Re-Framing Identity. His lecture was a masterful blend of biblical exegesis and sociopolitical analysis, leaving the audience captivated.

Later that year, on November 25, 2022, Prof. Cosmas Aluede Ojemen, a first-class Canon Law scholar from the Diocese of Uromi, presented his lecture titled Organs of Collaboration in Particular Churches Since the Second Vatican Council: A Canonical Overview. His address offered a meticulous canonical analysis of collaborative structures within the Church, showcasing his expertise.

In 2023, the tradition continued with Prof. Luke Emehiele Ijezie, a seasoned scripture scholar, who delivered the 6th inaugural lecture on April 28, 2023. His topic, Reading the Ethno-Religious Ideology of Ezra-Nehemiah in the Context of Ethnic and Religious Conflicts in Contemporary African Society, echoed  deeply, addressing contemporary African challenges through a biblical lens.

Before this, the 5th inaugural lecture was delivered by Prof. Ferdinand Nwigbo, a trailblazer in African theology. His lecture, the first from his department, struck at the very core of theological discourse in Africa, making an indelible mark.

Nine months after the 6th lecture, CIWA is set to host its 7th inaugural lecture on December 6, 2024. Prof. Inaku Kenneth Egere, an erudite scholar in digital communication, will present a forward-looking lecture titled Demystifying Emerging Media Theory for Remediating Contextualization for Digital Communication and Artificial Intelligence in Africa. This event promises to redefine theories of digital communication and artificial intelligence, marking the second inaugural lecture from CIWA's Department of Communication Studies.

Inaugural lectures hold a prestigious place in academia, being the exclusive reserve of professors. They serve as  public platform for scholars to showcase their research, insights, and contributions to knowledge. The tradition dates back to the medieval universities of Europe, with one of the earliest known inaugural lectures delivered at the University of Bologna in 1088. Over the centuries, this practice has evolved into a rite of passage for academics, symbolizing their entry into the “hall of academic fame.”

CIWA’s inaugural lectures are more than academic exercises; they are seeds of intellectual transformation. As CIWA approaches its 7th inaugural lecture, the institution reaffirms its commitment to advancing knowledge that addresses local and global challenges. This milestone reflects CIWA’s role in shaping minds and fostering discourse that transcends borders, enriching the academic and spiritual fabric of society.

CIWA stands not just at the nautical twilight but at the dawn of a brighter academic future. Its inaugural lectures are living proofs  of  the institute’s enduring legacy of intellectual excellence.

Advent Mass At Ciwa: A Celebration Of Hope And Anticipation

The liturgical year in the Catholic Church dawns anew with the First Sunday of Advent—a day imbued with anticipation and sacred hope. At the Catholic Institute of West Africa (CIWA),  Obehie Campus, this occasion unfolded in a manner that transcended the ordinary, melding solemnity with spiritual vibrancy.

The Mass began with a deeply evocative hymn, "Maranatha, Come Lord Jesus," echoing the ancient plea found in  the Didache. The well-prepared choir set a serene yet uplifting tone, their harmonies enveloping the faithful, who filled the chapel in their number. Presiding at. the Eucharistic celebration was the Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Dr. Uchu, flanked by concelebrants Rev. Fr. Okhueleigbe Osemhantie and Rev. Fr. William Ozuruonye, amidst  19 other priests at the Euchariastic celebration including the Rector of the Institute, Very Revd Fr Prof Jude Abidemi Asanbe.

In a departure from typical or regular  liturgical format, the celebrant, after the initial incensation of the altar, proceeded to bless and lit the first candle of the Advent wreath, a symbol of hope and the promise of Christ’s coming. With poetic liturgical elegance, he intoned the opening stanza of "Veni, Veni Emmanuel," a hymn steeped in the O Antiphons of Advent, captivating the faithful and setting a deeply contemplative tone.

As the congregation, resplendent in Advent’s preparatory purple, listened attentively to the Liturgy of the Word, the homily emerged as the pinnacle of the celebration. Fr. Uchu delivered a stirring reflection centered on hope—hope that anchors the soul in the midst of life's uncertainties. He drew a striking analogy from the ill-fated Titanic, a testament to human arrogance, warning, "Not even God can sink it" was a misplaced confidence, ultimately humbled by avoidable tragedy. “Our hope,” he urged, “must be anchored on God, a hope that inspires good deeds and remains responsive to those around us.”

In a moment of cultural synergy, the Igbo-inflected Sanctus "Nso Nso...." caused an ecstatic outpouring of praise among the faithful. Some wistfully recalled the spacious arrangement of the COVID-19 era—not for fear of disease, but for the freedom it afforded for fuller expressions of worship. As one correspondent, noted, “The faithful were electrified by the music.”

The Mass reached its crescendo with a vibrant thanksgiving led by November Nativity celebrants, including Rev. Frs. Andrew Otu and Philip Omenukwa & Okhueleigbe Osemhantie. Their procession was followed by friends and well-wishers, as the Rector of the Institute, Very Revd Fr  Prof Jude Abidemi Asanbe, imparted blessings, declaring November a “month of greatness” and its celebrants “marked by divine favour.”

Among the worshippers was a distinguished alumna of CIWA’s pioneer undergraduate class (1998–2002), celebrated for her academic excellence and her contributions to education, having developed an influential educational template for her diocese and state.

The Mass concluded with the formal Advent recessional, the faithful departing amidst resounding choruses. The event, rich in liturgical and spiritual significance, embodied the ethos of CIWA’s worship tradition—where orasic expressions of faith meet profound reverence.

A trial will indeed convince you.

Catholic Institute Of West Africa, Port Harcourt, Concludes Orientation Programme For 2024/2025 Academic Session

Catholic Institute of West Africa (CIWA), renowned for its intellectual and theological rigour, marked the official start of the 2024/2025 academic session with a dynamic orientation programme held across its Port Harcourt main campus and Obehie campus in Abia State. The two-day event, from November 28 to 29, 2024, saw students, staff, and dignitaries gathered for what has become a critical prelude  into CIWA’s culture of excellence.

The Sub-Dean of Students Affairs,  Rev. Fr. Dr.  Justin Jingoe Temswang, anchored the proceedings, ensuring a seamless flow of events as a roster of distinguished faculty members and administrative officers took the stage. These speakers unpacked vital information on financial regulations, ICT utilization, counseling services, security and liturgical celebrations. The atmosphere was imbued with a sense of purpose as students were immersed in the ethos and operational mechanics of CIWA, a premier Catholic institution driving intellectual discourse across West Africa subregion  and beyond.

At  Obehie campus, the crescendo of the orientation came on Friday, November 29, when the Rector, Very Rev. Fr. Prof. Jude Abidemi Asanbe, delivered a welcome  address brimming with gratitude and vision. Having addressed  Port Harcourt campus the previous day, he reiterated his appreciation for the bishops, religious superiors, parents, and sponsors who entrusted CIWA with their wards’ education. He lauded the new students for choosing CIWA, a decision he described as a commitment to excellence in theology, canon law, and Arts &  social sciences.

Prof. Asanbe turned a spotlight on the Communication Department, acknowledging the sacrifices of students who do not have the luxury of relocating annually from Obehie to Port Harcourt to complete their studies. The Rector introduced Rev. Fr. Dr. Okhueleigbe Osemhantie Amos, an alumnus whose academic journey culminated in a successfully defended dissertation in June 2024. Now a member of the CIWA faculty, Fr. Amos represents the institution’s benchmark of excellence. “CIWA graduates drive Catholic theology across the sub-region, showcasing the best of West Africa’s intellectual and spiritual heritage,” the Rector declared, emphasizing the institute’s transformative role in the Church and society.

The Rector did not shy away from addressing challenges, noting that every great institution faces hurdles. He underscored collaboration as the key to overcoming them, hinting at the great plans to elevate  Obehie campus into  Catholic University of West Africa. This vision, he revealed, was already in advanced stages, and he called on studentsto contribute by dedicating themselves to their studies and the sacramental life of the Church.

As part of the orientation, Rev. Fr. Dr. Samuel Gwimi detailed the academic structure of CIWA, describing its evolution from a postgraduate school to a full-fledged research institute with three faculties—Theology, Canon Law, and  Arts & Social Sciences—and ten departments. These departments, he noted, are led by experienced heads who double as academic advisors, supported by faculty deans who oversee interdisciplinary collaboration.

Adding texture to the programme, Rev. Fr. Prof. Kenneth Egere, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, emphasized CIWA’s hallmark: contextualized research. Prof. Egere, who is set to deliver his inaugural lecture on December 6, 2024, inspired students to embrace the institute’s mission of marrying global academic standards with local relevance.

Key moments included JaneFrances Okeke’s tour of the library facilities and Sr. Dr. Natalie Ajayi’s health briefing alongside Nurse Faith. Notable speakers like Fr. Dr. Chijioke Azuawusiefe, Acting Head of  Communication Department, and Fr. Dr. Philip Omenukwa, Acting Head of the Department of Philosophy, enriched the orientation with their insights.  Fr. Okhueleigbe detailed the students in the use of CIWA facilities and the role of students in their preservation. Other members of staff who were in attendance included: Sr. Dr. Elizabeth Aduloju, the Subdean of Students Affairs, Rev Fr Dr. Cajetan Ani, CFM, et al.

The programme  reached a reflective conclusion with a Eucharistic celebration, presided over by Fr. Dr. Justin Jingoe Temswang and featuring a homily by Fr. Okhueleigbe Osemhantie Amos. Drawing on the words of St. Thomas Aquinas, Fr. Amos exhorted the students to approach their studies as a form of worship, with the ultimate goal of glorifying God.

As the chapel doors closed, the orientation left an indelible impression on all participants, signaling the beginning of another academic chapter steeped in intellectual rigor and spiritual depth. For CIWA, the story of shaping minds and souls continues, one session at a time.

Catholic Institute Of West Africa,(ciwa), Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Conducts 2024/2025 Orientation For New Students

As universities and other tertiary institutions around the world embark on the commencement of a new academic year, one of the key events that marks the beginning of students’ academic journey is the orientation exercise. This essential event serves as an introduction to the institution, giving fresh students an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the institute's environment, meet their professors and administrative officers, and understand the norms, values, and expectations of the institution they are about to become a part of. It is a crucial time for students, especially those coming from different regions or even different countries, to get acclimated and prepared for the challenges and opportunities of university life.

At the Catholic Institute of West Africa (CIWA) in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, this year’s orientation for the 2024/2025 academic session promises to be a landmark event. Breaking with tradition, the orientation did not  hold in the first days of the new academic session as is customary. Instead, it was rescheduled to a later date to ensure that all students, including those who may have faced delays in arriving from various countries across  Africa and Nigeria, will have an equal opportunity to participate. This thoughtful decision highlights the administration’s commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that no student is left behind due to logistical issues.

According to a recent memo from the Registrar, Fr. Wilson Akhigbe, addressed to CIWA community, the orientation will now take place on the last Thursday and Friday of November, specifically the 28th and 29th of November, 2024. The timing ensures that all new students, regardless of their geographical location, will be able to attend and benefit from the information sessions and activities designed to make their transition into the institute's life smoother and more informed. The decision to hold the orientation before matriculation is particularly aimed at giving students a better chance to settle into their new academic and social environment, making the most of the institute’s resources and services before the start of their full academic programme.

This year’s orientation is expected to be an event of significant scope, with participation from all principal officers of the institute. From the Rector to the Chief Security Officer (CSO), and representatives from all departments and units, the event will be a comprehensive introduction to CIWA’s academic structure, cultural values, and institutional expectations. The inclusion of such a diverse group of the institute's leaders emphasizes the importance the administration places on the engagement and integration of new students into CIWA community. This will also serve as a platform for students to ask questions, share their concerns, and begin to develop relationships with key university personnel who will play pivotal roles in their academic careers.

Notably, there is great anticipation surrounding the formal address of the Rector to the new students. This address is expected to set the tone for the academic year and provide important insights into the ’institute's goals, vision, and the values that CIWA holds dear. The Rector’s address will offer guidance, reassurance, and inspiration to the incoming students, helping them understand the significance of their choice to study at CIWA and the opportunities that lie ahead. It will also serve as a call to action, motivating students to uphold the highest standards of academic excellence, integrity, and service to the community, in line with the mission of the Catholic Church and the core principles of the institute.

The news of this year’s orientation was met with enthusiasm by the student body, who recently conducted their elections following a constitutional review. The election process, which has ensured the selection of new student leaders, has created a sense of excitement and involvement among the students, who are now eager to participate in this key event. The students’ active role in the governance of the institution underscores the growing spirit of collaboration and engagement at CIWA. As student leaders continue to shape the direction of student affairs, their participation in the orientation process will undoubtedly play a significant role in ensuring that the event is both informative and meaningful.

As preparations for the orientation continue at full throttle, there are high hopes that the event will not only meet but exceed expectations. Beyond the formal addresses and presentations, students can look forward to a series of interactive workshops, team-building exercises, and social events that will help them build relationships with their peers and the wider CIWA community. With the increasing trend of universities around the globe embracing digital platforms for orientation, it is also expected that CIWA will incorporate online elements to reach students who may face challenges in physically attending all sessions. Such innovations ensure that all students, regardless of their situation, can engage with the content and benefit from the orientation experience.

This year’s CIWA orientation, though grounded in the traditional values of Catholic education, reflects a modern approach to ensuring that students feel supported, informed, and ready to embark on their academic journey. The move to reschedule the orientation is an example of the institute’s responsiveness to the needs of its students, demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity, accessibility, and student success.

Catholic Institute Of West Africa, Port Harcourt, (obehie Campus) Celebrates 2024 Solemnity Of Christ The King In Grand Style

In the heart of Port Harcourt, the Catholic Institute of West Africa reverberated with the joyous echoes of faith as it celebrated the Solemnity of Christ the King. This momentous occasion not only marks the culmination of the Sanctoral cycle within the Church but also intertwines the cherished tradition of the Eucharistic Procession, traditionally reserved for Corpus Christi, with the solemnity of this glorious day.

As dawn broke, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation, signaling a celebration of profound significance. The institute's choir, resplendent in their ceremonial attire, opened the proceedings with a captivating Igbo hymn, heralding the majesty of Christ the Universal King. The Concelebrated Mass, presided over by the esteemed Very Revd. Fr. Dr. Peter  Uchu, one of Nigeria's most revered liturgists, was a spectacle to behold. He was ably supported by the distinguished Very Revd. Fr. Dr. Jamahh Usman and the insightful Very Revd. Fr. Dr. Andrew Otu, both luminaries in their respective fields of Liturgy and Pastoral Theology.

The liturgical richness of the Mass was further enhanced by the choreographic performances orchestrated by Sr. Agatha Belu tutored chorographers who transformed  the chapel into a heavenly tableau reminiscent of the celestial visions described in the Book of Revelation. The procession leading to the proclamation of the Gospel was a breathtaking display, infused with royal splendour and traditional Hausa-Fulani motifs. The Gospel bearer, Revd. Fr. Augustine Coker from Sierra Leone, moved with an elegance that captivated all present.

Fr. Uchu's homily was a masterclass in theological reflection, incisively articulating the historical context behind Pope Pius XI’s establishment of the Solemnity in 1925. His words resonated deeply, illuminating the enduring relevance of this feast in today’s world. The distribution of Holy Communion, a moment of profound grace, extended longer than anticipated as the chapel overflowed with the faithful eager to partake in the sacred mystery.

Traditionally, one might expect a simple dismissal following the Mass, yet this day unfolded differently. The Eucharistic Procession marked not just an end but a joyful beginning. With rhythmic songs and jubilant drumming, the campus came alive, echoing louder than  the historic celebration of the Etsu Nupe, where men danced and women drummed, a delightful inversion of the ordinary. Leading the celebratory dance was Very Revd Fr. DDr. Phillip Omenukwa from the Philosophy Department,  alongside the spirited Fr. Dr.  Chijioke, SJ., while Srs. MaryJane, Elizabeth & Natalia captured hearts with their graceful dance to the eternal king.

As blessings cascaded upon the gathering, flower girls holily scattered fragrant roses, symbolizing purity and grandiose. Fr. Uchu ceremoniously passed the Sanctissimo Sacramento to Fr. William, a diligent PhD student, before entrusting it to Fr. Okhueleigbe, one of the newest members of the faculty, who later transferred to Fr. Uche for final Benediction. The heavens smiled upon the congregation, sparing them the rains that had marred last year’s festivities, allowing the joyous music to resonate as far as the faithful's passion could carry them.

This day holds profound significance besides the Solemnity itself; it also a  day of poignant remembrance as the oldest priest in Nigeria, Rt. Monsignor Thomas Oleghe of the Auchi diocese, peacefully transitioned into glory at the venerable age of 104, surrounded by loving priests and friends. What a glorious day to take a bow!

Reported by Fr. Okhueleigbe Osemhantie A.  from CESSAC-CIWA, November 24, 2024.
